The future of cancer

If we can understand the future of cancer in Australia, we can plan how to curb its impact.

Our research shows that the overall rate of people dying of cancer will fall by around 20% across the next 25 years (2022-2044).

But the total number of people who will be diagnosed with or die of cancer in this time period will be far greater than the previous 25 years.

This means cancer will remain a significant public health challenge in the coming decades. Which is why we’re calling on governments to invest more heavily in cancer prevention and screening programs – initiatives that we know save lives.

HELPING COMMUNITIES ACROSS NSW

A friendly face in time of crisis

Sylvia, an avid supporter of Cancer Council for 20 years, whose husband died in December last year, was called by the team during welfare checks to see how she was coping after the floods, “Sylvia was in hospital after undergoing open heart surgery and then the next day her home was flooded,”

“Our Byron Bay Team spent the day cleaning her house and coordinating support. She had sadly lost everything, her home was an empty shell.”

Sylvia’s neighbours managed to save her husband’s ashes and some jewellery as the waters rose. Sylvia is currently in a rehabilitation centre in Brisbane and the Northern Team will keep in contact with her.
