A child dies from cancer every 4 days in Australia.
Please help fund urgent research to save a young life.
Donate to give a child like Rylee the chance to survive cancer with less pain and suffering.
Rylee was diagnosed with a very aggressive brain tumour at the tender age of just 16 months.
Rylee learned words no child should know: drugs, steroids, central lines, needles, lumbar punctures and she even invented a heart-breaking word of her own, ‘hurties’.
She endured vomiting, mouth ulcers, blood transfusions, infections, hair loss and nasal gastric tubes. She cried when they put the needles in and replaced dressings. All before she was three years old.
Thankfully, Rylee survived. But I can barely imagine the agony she and her family went through. It could happen to any of us.
Your ongoing support could help fund the breakthrough moment that saves lives like that of Rylee, or someone close to you, and offers them a healthy, happy future.
Associate Professor Bellamy Cheung and her team are making significant progress.
Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related deaths in Australian children. One of the deadliest is brain cancer, because they contain high levels of c-MYC and MYCN proteins, which are like fuel for cancer, helping it grow and spread too quickly.
Kinder and better treatments are urgently needed for these aggressive cancers, and that is the aim of Associate Professor Cheung’s project: to develop a new drug UNSW-SC-22 targeting aggressive childhood brain cancers driven by the MYC proteins. A/Prof Cheung’s team will continue testing the effectiveness of this drug in the lab. They will also assess how it behaves with different treatment types before moving into clinical trials.
If successful, this could transform treatment for young patients with these aggressive brain tumours, offering safer and more effective treatment options. Your gift will help fund more vital research, just like this.
